Reading List for Hungry Christians
In the physical realm, our hunger leads us to feed ourselves, and as we feed ourselves we grow.
In order to grow as Christians into “oaks of righteousness” (Isaiah 61:3), we must feed ourselves with God’s truth. The primary way for us to do this is to study God’s Word, the Bible. In addition, we would do well to read books that have been written by God’s people, at the prompting of the Holy Spirit, for the edification of the Body of Christ. Here is where we can focus on specific topics that will build us up. Some of the very helpful books that I have discovered are:
The Release of the Spirit, by Watchman Nee Focusing on John 12:24, this godly Chinese theologian shows us how to die to self and release the Holy Spirit to operate through us.
The Spiritual Man, by Watchman Nee As far as I know, there has never been a book written to compare with this explanation of how God has made us: body, soul and spirit. This book explains a great deal about how we humans operate, especially in our relationship with God.
Intimate Friendship With God, by Joy Dawson This international Bible teacher shares how God taught her intimacy with Him.
Holiness, Truth and the Presence of God, by Francis Frangipane Truly a foundational book for all Christians. Francis seeks to help us enter the presence of God.
Face Up With A Miracle, by Don Basham Part testimony and part teaching, Don shares how he and his wife asked God to show them miracles like they saw in the Bible.
Take Another Look At Guidance, by Bob Mumford From the Bible and personal experience, Bob shares the simple method God taught him for finding His will for his life.
Healing for Damaged Emotions, by David Seamands Biblical and Spirit-led observations of the common kinds of wounding found in Christians. Helps us to understand ourselves.
The Renewed Mind, by Larry Christenson From God's instruction in Romans 12:2, Larry shows us the importance of letting the Holy Spirit of God renew our minds.
Hippo in the Garden, by James Ryle As disconcerting as discovering a hippo in your garden, the Holy Spirit is moving over the earth in unprecedented ways, upsetting many.
The Practice of the Presence of God, by Brother Lawrence In a monastery, Brother Lawrence found that doing simple tasks gave him the opportunity to really discover God.
None of These Diseases, by S. I. McMillen This MD explains why God's instructions about food and cleanliness in the Wilderness were amazingly medically sound.
The Christian Family, by Larry Christenson Quoting large amounts of the Bible, Larry shows what God thinks a Christian family should look like.
When The Spirit Comes With Power, by John White This psychiatrist and missionary reports on interviews with many who have experienced the power of the Holy Spirit in this century, as well as the history of revival down through the centuries.
Catch the Fire, by Guy Chevreau This Baptist Bible school professor shares his research from investigating the revival that has been burning since January, 1994, at the Toronto Airport Christian Fellowship. He also reports on revivals in the US since 1750.
Surprised by the Power of the Spirit, by Jack Deere Former professor at Dallas Theological Seminary, Dallas, TX, which espouses cessationism (belief that the gifts of the Holy Spirit ended in the 1st century), Jack shares how God showed him (with evidence) how the Holy Spirit is moving in power in the world today, in miracles, healings, etc.
Surprised by the Voice of God, by Jack Deere Jack reports how God is speaking to and through His people today.
The Beginner's Guide to the Gift of Prophecy, by Jack Deere Jack explains, from the Bible, what prophecy really is and how God wants to use this gift to bless His people. He also shares accounts of how it has been a great blessing.
Transformation of the Inner Man, by John & Paula Sandford Resulting from years of ministry to people and studying God's Word, John & Paula share how God wants to transform our wounded hearts through sanctification and direct healing by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Kingdom of Self, by Earl Jabay This Spirit-filled psychiatrist shows us how self-centered we are, and how God wants to set us free to be mighty servants to bless others.
Deliver Us From Evil, by Don Basham In my opinion, this pastor has written the best introductory book on the demon realm, how demons operate and how God's people are instructed to cast demons out of people.
Screwtape Letters, by C. S. Lewis Famed Christian author writes a fictitious account of the letters of a demon named Screwtape to his boss, giving amazing insights into the demonic realm. Here, the enemy is the Body of Christ. Very helpful.
The Holy Spirit & You, by Dennis & Rita Bennett This pastor and wife have written a great book on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, describing each one, explaining how it operates and giving wonderful accounts of how they have seen these miraculous gifts in operation.
Blessing or Curse, by Derek Prince From one of modern times' best Bible teachers, we learn that there really are curses that can afflict our lives. We learn how to detect them, and how to find release from them.
